What Does a Birth Doula Team Actually Do? (And Why Three Doulas Are Better Than One)

If you've been searching for a Denver birth doula, you've probably found a range of providers and wonder why a team based approach might be what you need.  The short answer is that you don't need a team. But once you understand how team-based doula support actually works, it's hard to imagine going back.

Here at Rosemary Wellness Collective, we are Emily, Bree, and Lia, three experienced birth doulas serving the Denver metro from Castle Rock to Boulder, from hospital births to home births to birth centers. And the way we work is a little different from what most people imagine when they think about hiring a doula.

First, what does a birth doula actually do?

A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. We are not medical providers. We do not deliver babies, perform exams, or make clinical decisions. What we do is make sure that you feel safe, supported, informed, and held throughout one of the most significant experiences of your life.

In practice that looks like a lot of different things. It looks like texting with you in early labor while you are at home, helping you decide when to head to your birth place. It looks like helping your partner know how to show up for you,  what to say, where to put their hands, when to step back. It looks like knowing when to speak up and help you advocate for your preferences with your care team, and knowing when to be completely quiet and just breathe with you. It looks like staying after the baby is born to help you find your first latch, to make sure you feel settled, to help the whole room exhale.

Research consistently shows that continuous doula support reduces the likelihood of cesarean birth, shortens labor, decreases the use of pain medication when that is your goal, and significantly improves satisfaction with the birth experience. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, along with the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine, have identified doulas as one of the most effective tools to improve labor and delivery outcomes.

But here is what the research does not fully capture, the way it feels to have someone in the room who knows you, who has thought about your birth, and who is entirely focused on you.

So what makes a doula team different?

When you work with a solo birth doula, you build a relationship with one person, and that one person is on call for you around the clock for weeks. The reality is that doulas are human. They get sick. They attend another birth that runs long. They get the call at 3am after being awake for twenty hours, and they show up anyway, because they are committed to you, but they arrive depleted in ways that are hard to see and harder to measure.

We built Rosemary Wellness Collective because we believed there was a better way.

When you work with our team, you get one set of hands at your birth and three hearts and three brains behind everything that happens. Here is how it actually works.

You meet and build real relationships with all three of us. Your prenatal appointments rotate through the team so that by the time your birth day comes, every one of us knows your name, your birth preferences, your fears, your hopes, and what makes you feel safe. There are no strangers in your birth room.

We share call so you always have the freshest doula. We rotate our on-call schedule intentionally. The doula who responds when you go into labor is rested and fully present, never running on fumes from someone else's birth. This is not a backup system. This is the design.

One doula is fully yours on your birth day. One of us is with you completely, focused entirely on you and your partner. The knowledge, experience, and collective wisdom of our whole team is behind every decision she makes in that room.

The team model means your support is deeper than any single doula could offer. Between Emily, Bree, and Lia we bring backgrounds in social work, certified lactation counseling, yoga and somatic coaching, the Body Ready Method, Spinning Babies, Gilligan's Method, and DONA training. We have attended births at every hospital and birth center across the Denver metro. When something unexpected happens in your birth, and sometimes it does,  someone on our team has seen it, supported it, and helped a family through it.

What does a Denver birth doula team cost?

At Rosemary Wellness Collective our birth doula packages range from $2,000 to $2,700 on a sliding scale based on what works for your family. We offer payment plans and we work with insurance companies to seek reimbursement, while we cannot guarantee it, we are often successful. We also serve Colorado Medicaid clients and accept Carrot Fertility.

We believe everyone deserves a doula. If cost has been the thing standing between you and this support, reach out. We will do our best to make it work.

Where do you serve?

We support births across the entire Denver metro — hospital births at St. Joseph's, Lutheran, Littleton Adventist, UCHealth, Children's, BCOD, and more. Birth center births at Birth Center of Denver, Colorado Birth and Wellness and more. And home births from Boulder to Conifer, Thornton to Highlands Ranch, and everywhere in between.
